Because we are made to live life to the fullest, Pain Free!

Understanding Pain
Live Pain Free

Having pain can greatly affect a person’s quality of life. The pain can make it hard to perform daily activities such as bathing, sleeping, eating and going out. It may also be hard for relatives and close friends to understand the pain and this can add stress and emotional distress to the individual.

Pain that is not well controlled can develop into chronic pain. So it is necessary to take the painkillers prescribed by the doctor as these pain control methods have proven to successfully control pain it in about 85 out of every 100 people. Individuals who try to endure the pain and avoid painkillers can make the pain harder to control in the future.

Ultrasound Guided Treatment
What you should know?

Traditionally, some of the chronic pain interventions and treatment have been performed based on anatomical landmarks or guided by the use of x-ray. When performed with 'landmark' techniques, there is no way of definitely knowing where the tip of the needle is or where the medications injected is going. The use of x-ray will subject the patient to radiation exposure.

The use of ultrasound is becoming more popular not just for diagnostic imaging; the application of ultrasound in regional anaesthesia and pain medicine is a rapidly growing modality to enhance the management of acute and chronic pain

Ultrasound imaging, uses high frequency sound waves to provide direct visualisation of various soft tissues of the body such as nerves, tendons and muscle. It also enables real-time needle advancement by the pain physician to the target area and hence the precise location of the medication injected is assured, improving patient care. Besides accuracy, the use of ultrasound to guide injection/treatment has being shown to reduce the number of attempts, procedure time and procedure-related complications due to anatomical variation.

Some examples of ultrasound-guided chronic pain applications include:
  • Cervical nerve root block and treatment
  • Stellate ganglion block
  • Peripheral nerve block and treatment
  • Blocks of painful stump neuromas
  • Caudal epidural injection
  • Deep muscle (piriformis, obturator internus) trigger point injection
  • Joint injections (knee, shoulder, hip, elbow)
  • Injection for tendonitis, tenosynovitis, bursitis
